ENIGMA (2002)

EW's GRADE
C+

Details Release Date: Sep 24, 2002; Movie Rated: R; Genres: Historical, Mystery and Thriller, Romance; With: Jeremy Northam, Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet; Distributor: Miramax

Such a talented cast and crew deserve a better movie. In a drab, gray, WWII British intel headquarters, Tom Jericho (Dougray Scott) is a drab, gray mathematician/U-boat code breaker haunted by former lover and suspected spy Claire (Saffron Burrows), who's gone AWOL. A bespectacled Kate Winslet plays Claire's dowdy roommate. Michael Apted's direction and the Tom Stoppard script zing here and there, but Enigma's few tense moments don't add up to a satisfying puzzle.
