As the eponymous owner of a popular nightspot in early-'60s Louisiana, Bassett radiates her usual fierce dignity and grace. If only her talents weren't wasted in such a tepid made-for-cable flick, which sees her Ruby fall for a white musician (Anderson) in town for a few gigs. Weakened by stilted dialogue and mawkish Life Lesson subplots -- and filmed through what appears to be a thin layer of syrup -- Ruby's bucket is only half full.
