WHY THEM The boyhood pals from Boston each successfully made the transition to action and proved capable of opening a summer blockbuster: Damon saved a troubled production, ''The Bourne Identity,'' for Universal, while Affleck overcame alcohol problems to revive the stagnant Tom Clancy franchise in ''The Sum of All Fears'' and upped his thesp cred with ''Changing Lanes.'' (Affleck's high-profile romance with ''Jersey Girl'' costar J. Lo will keep him in the news, for good or ill.) Despite the nonstart of ''The Runner,'' their LivePlanet production company (now in a multipicture deal with Disney) continues to churn out imaginative, boundary-crossing fare like the Emmy-nominated hit reality series ''Project Greenlight'' and ABC's new interactive noir ''Push, Nevada.''
