Red Hot + Riot, a dizzying tribute to late Nigerian afro-beat king Fela Kuti, is so packed with top-flight musicians and unexpected supergroup team-ups, it's hard to keep track of who's doing what. Is that D'Angelo, Fela's son Femi, Macy Gray, Nile Rodgers, and Roy Hargrove? Or is it Res, Fela drummer Tony Allen, soukous star Ray Lema, Baaba Maal, and saxophonist Archie Shepp? Who cares? With grooves this delicately monstrous and a lineup this well-chosen and eclectic, it's the best sort of sensory overload.
