Clone (2002)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Oct 08, 2002; Lead Performances: Michael Gordon (Musician) and Leo Kottke

Clone, the most eccentric of the Phish side projects, unites the band's bassist Mike Gordon with fingerpicking legend Leo Kottke. The matchup turns out to be utterly natural: Kottke's laconic quirkiness and the mountain-stream crispness of his guitar mark him as a forefather of the Phish sound. Not surprisingly, the spry instrumentals are the high- lights, while Gordon's songs tend toward the whimsical (at best) and cutesy (at worst). Brunch music, yes -- but for your most oddball friends.
