THE ROLLING STONES' 1981 hit ''Waiting on a Friend,'' check out LUNA's Close Cover Before Before Striking [sic] for a typically lackadaisical take on the tune.

BOB DYLAN's Blood on the Tracks, pick up You're a Big Girl Now, the excellent new EP from Come singer THALIA ZEDEK, which features a bloody good cover of, yes, Blood's ''You're a Big Girl Now.''

And if you really like Blood, get ahold of the recent CD from New York band MARY LEE'S CORVETTE; it convincingly re-creates the entire album.

Truly strange tunes, blast off to the SPACE LADY's rendition of the ELECTRIC PRUNES' ''I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)'' on the ''outsider music'' compilation Songs in the Key of Z Vol. 2.
