All About
Eve''I think the most important thing about style is the smile you put on other people's faces -- or the look of absolute terror,'' said Steven Tyler, the scarf-loving Aerosmith frontman who won the Rockstyle Award at last night's VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. But there were more smiles than expressions of terror, at least among the winners, who were led by Jennifer Lopez, who displayed why she was named Most Influential Artist by claiming her prize in an innovative schoolgirl outfit that included a white beret, a white miniskirt, and stiletto heels. (Move over, Britney.)
Other big winners included blond-tressed rapper Eve, who won the Breakthrough Style Award and thanked her nail stylist. Gwyneth Paltrow won the Red Carpet Award, despite her much-derided Oscar appearance in March in an unflattering Alexander McQueen gown. Still in mourning over the recent death of her father, she did not show.
Among designers, the top prize, Designer of the Year, went to Tom Ford. Ralph Lauren won a lifetime achievement award, presented by fellow aspiring preppy Sean ''P. Diddy'' Combs. McQueen, also apparently forgiven for his Paltrow faux pas, won the Revolutionary Designer Award.
''Will & Grace'' star Debra Messing, who made her appearance in a McQueen ballgown, hosted the show, held at New York's Radio City Music Hall. Performers included David Bowie, Tyler (duetting with Pink), and Carlos Santana and Michelle Branch. A complete list of winners is below:
