THE RATINGS

THE AMAZING 'TRACE'

With CSI (1st) capturing its biggest audience ever, Survivor: Thailand (4th) thriving, and Anthony LaPaglia's missing-persons mystery Without a Trace (13th) closing the gap with ER (3rd), CBS beat NBC on Thursday for the first time in a year and a half. Reversing the trend of most new shows, Trace is on an upswing: The third episode drew nearly 1.5 million more viewers than the second. Not all of CBS' new crime dramas are shooting up the charts: Robbery Homicide Division (68th) is getting mugged by NBC's Friday fixture Law & Order: SVU (13th). Both the Peacock's Sunday rookies, American Dreams and Boomtown, cooled in week 3, tying for 45th, while The WB's Birds of Prey (70th) soared to some of the net's highest debut numbers, attracting 7.6 million bird-watchers.
