In September, Arista tried to make Lavigne's latest turning point in life as painless as possible by throwing her a surprise 18th birthday party on the ice rink at Manhattan's Chelsea Piers. She managed to body-slam a couple of Arista staffers, including the label's general manager. That took a few folks aback, given her 5-foot-2 wisp of a frame. ''Everyone was blown away, like, 'Oh my God, you're so good a skater!''' Avril the Invincible stirs, miffed at the astonishment inherent in the compliments. ''I grew up playing hockey. What, did you think I was going to fall on my ass?''
