Bland 1960s-era TV star by day, pornographer by night: Bob Crane's self-destructive, compartmentalized life and sordid 1978 murder inspire Paul Schrader's artful, rigorous, and damned depressing morality tale about celebrity, technology, and average, afflicted American manhood. Greg Kinnear is a revelation as Crane, dropping his bright smile and going to seed with precision; Willem Dafoe's vaguely menacing style suits his role as a toxic hanger-on whose own skills and seamy needs were in symbiosis with Crane's.
