THE LOWDOWN In TLC's hit show, two sets of neighbors swap abodes for 48 hours, then they each make over a room in the other's house for under $1,000. Toss in a host, a carpenter, two designers -- and a ticking clock -- and watch as homeowners scream, laugh, and even cry at the sight of their new ''Spaces.''
DESIGN DO'S Think outside the box. Your kids' refrigerator-door art can be transferred onto dishes or the back of chair covers. And that planter you thought was too pretty to pot in? Stand it on its side, and voilà! it's a picture frame.
DESIGN DON'TS Try not to forget who lives in the space. Remember: ''TS'' designer Genevieve Gorder applied moss to the walls of a San Diego apartment, only to find out later that the tenants had allergies. And designer Hildi Santo-Tomas put hay on the walls of a family room -- ripe for the picking (and digesting) by the homeowners' curious baby.
WE SAY Totally addictive. A show that has inspired a flock of admirers -- and almost as many copycats -- is doing something right.
