While You Were Out

TLC, Saturdays at 10 p.m.

THE LOWDOWN An unsuspecting family member goes away for two days and comes back to find a surprise: One room has been redecorated. The ''Out'' team includes a host, a designer, and two carpenters who help redo a room for under $1,500 (or $1,800 if it's outside).

DESIGN DO'S One designer's advice: Give a communal space some elements for him and some for her. If he has a sports theme going, don't be afraid to add some feminine touches -- like a crocheted blanket on the couch or fresh flowers on the coffee table. After all, you both have to live there.

DESIGN DON'TS Family members have learned the hard way to avoid real plants if you don't have a green thumb -- nobody wants to pick dead leaves out of the carpet.

WE SAY Once your creative juices are flowing from watching ''Spaces,'' TLC's other British import seems like the perfect follow-up, even if it isn't as much fun as its predecessor.
