A
No filmmaker evokes a sense of community more warmly than John Sayles. The populist auteur sets his latest opus in a sleepy Florida burg infested with real estate developers. The panoply of vivid characters includes an emotionally weather-beaten motel proprietor (Falco, in an Oscar-league about-face from her Sopranos work) and an infomercial actress (an equally fine Bassett) making a less than triumphant return to her hometown. And if you believe that supporting actors come any better than Jane Alexander and Ralph Waite (as Falco's eccentric folks), I've got some swampland in Florida to sell you.
