How's ''Trading Spaces'' going?
It's completely chaotic and just nuts. It's a lot of fun in the sense that there's no script and when we shoot a scene [the producers] will be, like, ''Okay, Ty, what are we doing here?'' and I'm, like, ''Well, let's go run in traffic'' and they're, like, ''Okay.'' There's not much structure, which is great. It's a lot of freedom for me to be a complete ham and an idiot on TV. And at the same time I also get to do my favorite thing, which is design and build things.
What's the furniture in your own house like?
I built it all, including a really killer platform bed, all Brazilian cherry, and these really cool ottomans. When it comes to building furniture I use really nice woods and put a lot of time into it. Everything's put together with glue and wooden pegs, no nails or screws. I would have to say modern primitive is the style of my furniture. I've got the bathroom in this whole Polynesian feel and I ran bamboo down the wall. I make a lot of lamps out of different things like Chinese placemats. I am really full of craft.
You sound like you'd make a great designer.
I'd love to be designer for a day and let them be a carpenter -- it'd be hilarious. We've been talking about it. Both jobs are difficult because we've done a lot of really nice rooms and furniture, but we're also trying to make an interesting TV show. Sometimes we make rooms where you'd never want any of that stuff in your house, but I swear to God, you're crossing your fingers thinking they're really gonna hate it, and they're, like, ''We love it.'' It's fun because you never know what's going to happen.
Anyway, back to your good looks... Is it true ABC approached you to audition to be the first ''Bachelor''?
Yeah. The chick who was casting it, her sister was a big fan of ''Trading Spaces,'' so she called me. But after seeing the first show I'm tooooootally glad I didn't do that -- whew. I've been in a relationship for a while, but I like to leave the door open. They told me that I was supposed to pick a girl that I was going to marry. Ummm, yeah.
