Adventures in Videos

EW grades four new videos from J. Lo, Shania, Beck, and The Strokes. Find out who made the honor roll

1. THE STROKES ''SOMEDAY''
Can underground bands sell big without selling out? Here, director Roman Coppola puts the acclaimed New York act in a mock episode of ''Family Feud.'' By wittily referencing such a dorky show -- and by casting as their opponents the unimpeachably cool Guided by Voices -- the Strokes rank on the notion of going mainstream and prove they're hipsters beyond reproach. 2. J. LO ''JENNY FROM THE BLOCK''
An indictment of prying gossips, ''Jenny'' features spy-camera footage of the singer showing off her caboose and romping with groom-to-be Ben Affleck. Unfortunately, the clip's focus on her bod eroticizes the voyeurism it intends to skewer. Even the most persistent paparazzi exhibit better taste. D

3. SHANIA TWAIN ''I'M GONNA GETCHA GOOD!''
Twain gives critics a gift with this video, which depicts her as the robotic creature they believe her to be. The big-budget futurist fantasy, in which Twain plays a singing/dancing Power Ranger gone mad, recalls Jacko's most excessive '80s clips. The song is spry and delightful, but its visual corollary is bloated and dull. C-

4. BECK ''LOST CAUSE''
Defeat never looked so glorious. Beck's video centers on an effigy of the singer, made of confetti, balloons, and sparklers. Like a rocket in reverse, the dummy falls to earth, shedding pieces along the way in explosive discharges. While the music chronicles romantic loss, the video captures the part of heartbreak that's spectacular. A
