Ever the pragmatist, Washington insists his new career path springs from pure necessity. ''I think about Clint Eastwood or Warren Beatty, guys who have moved into a whole 'nother arena. I like that,'' he says. '''Cause in the back of my mind, I was going 'You know, sooner or later the calls are going to stop coming. From 2002 to 2022, what do you go for now?' I think filmmaking is the next part of that.'' In other words, Denzel Washington's hands have a lot more to say.
