''About Schmidt'' was voted best movie of the year by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Saturday, as star Jack Nicholson shared the best actor prize with Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays a charismatic criminal in ''Gangs of New York.'' ''About Schmidt'' also won best screenplay, while ''Gangs'' scored for production design as well. Pedro Almódovar grabbed best director for ''Talk to Her.''
Julianne Moore was named best actress for two films, ''Far From Heaven'' and ''The Hours'' (the latter was the best picture choice of another film critics' society, the National Board of Review). Chris Cooper scored best supporting actor for his portrayal of a dentist-avoiding orchid hunter in ''Adaptation,'' while ''Sopranos'' star Edie Falco won best supporting actress for her role as a motel owner in ''Sunshine State.'' Other winners included ''Y Tu Mamá También'' for best foreign-language film, and drag-queen documentary ''The Cockettes'' beating out ''Bowling for Columbine'' for best documentary.
The Boston Society of Film Critics (which counts EW.com staff writer Gary Susman as a member), meanwhile, diverged from both the National Board of Review and their L.A. counterparts, choosing ''The Pianist'' as best film and giving it two other prizes: Roman Polanski scored best director and star Adrien Brody won best actor. Other winners included Maggie Gyllenhaal (''Secretary'') for best actress, Alan Arkin (''13 Conversations About One Thing'') for best supporting actor and Toni Collette (''About a Boy,'' ''The Hours'') for best supporting actress.
