What's new about ''Star Search''

#4

PREMIERE 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8

WHAT'S NEW Ed McMahon is out and Arsenio Hall is in as the host, but the magic formula remains basically the same. Singers (in junior and adult categories), comics, and wannabe supermodels try to woo votes from celebrity judges. Internet votes from fans will also be considered in determining winners. On the ninth and final episode (the show runs twice a week for four weeks), two semifinalists from each category will compete for the $100,000 grand prize.

WHY WE CARE The original show (which aired from 1983 to 1995) attracted some pretty snazzy contestants: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ray Romano, and Justin Timberlake, to name a few. We can expect Hall to sidestep McMahon's smarm and add some much-needed humor -- but let's hope he doesn't ask the audience to woof.
