'Catch' of the Day

Tom Hanks joins reunited Phish on stage -- The jam band, back after a two-year hiatus, revives its New Year's Eve tradition of a Madison Square Garden marathon, with a brief appearance by the actor

For their first concert in more than two years, the reunited Phish reeled in an unlikely guest star: Tom Hanks. The ''Catch Me if You Can'' star made a 15-second appearance during the jam band's New Year's Eve concert at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Fittingly, he hit the stage during the song ''Wilson,'' which was accompanied by a film clip of Hanks' ''Cast Away.'' Wilson, of course, was the name of his volleyball costar in that movie, as well as that of his wife, actress Rita Wilson.

New Year's Eve shows at the Garden have become something of a tradition for the Vermont quartet, but they missed the last couple of years after the band shocked fans in 2000 by announcing an indefinite hiatus. After two years of solo projects, Phish reunited, recorded a new album (''Round Room''), and returned to the Garden with a four and a half hour marathon show, for which scalped tickets went for as high as $4,000, according to the New York Daily News. Not that Phishheads won't have more opportunities to see the band in the near future. The band goes to Hampton, Va., for three nights this week, followed by a 12-date tour of the U.S. in February.
