BOX OFFICE

Good 'lord'

The lord of the rings: the two towers towered over the box office for the second straight frame, driving the biggest Christmas weekend in history. The second installment of Peter Jackson's Tolkien trilogy earned $200.1 million, a 28 percent increase over its predecessor's initial two-week take. As for Leo versus Leo, audiences thus far seem to prefer DiCaprio as a young swingin' con artist (Steven Spielberg's Catch Me if You Can generated $9,532 per theater) rather than a club-swingin' contender (Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York earned $4,999 per venue). A pair of high-wattage romantic comedies, Two Weeks Notice and Maid in Manhattan, held up reasonably well, and a trio of award hopefuls enjoyed strong limited bows (The Hours earned $30,784 per screen, Chicago $26,947, and The Pianist $18,544). Life wasn't beautiful for Roberto Benigni: Pinocchio croaked.
