THE BOOK YOU HAVE TO READ

The Bear Comes Home

The protagonist of this book is a muzzy medium-brown bear of a certain age who plays jazz saxophone but has to keep his hat and trench coat on so as not to get arrested. He's really a bear, and he's really a musician. A bookseller and jazz aficionado -- a man who veers toward melancholy -- first recommended it to me, so I knew it would be good. It was better than I could have hoped: lush, beautiful writing about music, an unforgettable point of view, even interspecies sex. Buy this book and keep your fingers (or paws) crossed that Zabor will grace us with another one soon.
