Before sprouting wolfish whiskers for ''X-Men,'' Hugh Jackman was exposing a nice chest of hair on the London stage as Curly in a 1998 ''Oklahoma!'' In the year's most intriguing casting, he goes back to song and dance, this time on Broadway, playing fellow Australian Peter Allen in ''The Boy From Oz.'' Nearly as famous for marrying Liza Minnelli as for his hits (''I Go to Rio''), the openly gay Allen died of AIDS in 1992. ''Hugh is perfect. He's funny, charming, energetic, and sings beautifully,'' says ''Oz'' producer Ben Gannon. Some have wondered if playing a gay pop star is a wise choice for an actor fast becoming one of Hollywood's top leading men. ''That's a rather old-fashioned view,'' says Gannon. ''Hugh is very secure in himself. And roles like this don't come along often, whether they're gay or straight.'' (October)
