Details Release Date: Dec 10, 2002; Lead Performance: Various Artists

Countering heartfelt technique with hipster humor, this singles comp demonstrates why Chicago-based Bloodshot is the most vital country label working beyond the fringe. Musicologists can debate Bloodshot's notions of authenticity, but all of its artists -- Ryan Adams, Kelly Hogan, Neko Case, etc. -- work within the genre's boundaries, even when covering Madonna's ''Like a Virgin'' or Funkadelic's ''Maggot Brain.''
