EW's celebration of the year's Washington state left readers with votes for and against the Antwone Fisher director-star, his Entertainer of the Year mates, and our 2002 wrap-up (#687/688, Dec. 20/27). ''I have never enjoyed an end-of-the-year tally more,'' raves Toronto's Becca Gordon. ''From the actors to the music, you were witty and on the money throughout.'' That was our aim, but there may be a brawl brewing among Big Fat Greek Wedding guests. ''I was glad that Owen Gleiberman included the overrated Wedding on his Worst list. I saw this film and was unimpressed.'' But for John Book of Waco, Tex., Wedding hit home: ''Cross-cultural marriages can be difficult because of the mountains of differences that don't come out until well into married life. Wedding gave me and my wife some perspective. One of the 10 best? Maybe not. One of the 5 worst? Owen's nuts.'' Eh, he's been called worse.
You could have canceled my order for presents this year: EW's Best of 2002 double issue was all I could ever want and then some. LAUREN HANSON LLSAE2@aol.com Orange, Calif.
Let Them Entertain You
I think it's great that you've recognized the multi-talented Denzel Washington as the Entertainer of the Year (The Entertainers). What's even greater is the fact that you resisted the urge to give the honor to Eminem. KEVIN PRUSH firstname.lastname@example.org Centereach, N.Y.
Denzel Washington, Entertainer of the Year -- for 2002? What work did he deliver this year? Sure, he won the Oscar for Training Day. And he acted in and directed Antwone Fisher, but that wasn't released until after your press time. So until we have a chance to see if his acting talent translates behind the camera, this really can't be taken into account. WILLIAM VERKUILEN Minnetonka,Minn.
You place Nia Vardalos as one of your 12 entertainers of the year, then Owen Gleiberman put her movie on the Worst list? Sounds like a big fat stab in the back to me. DANNY BRONSTEIN email@example.com Woodland Hills, Calif.
Best in Show
Apparently, Owen Gleiberman and Lisa Schwarzbaum have not seen all the movies that have come out this year; otherwise, they would know that there were much worse films than My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (The Best and Worst). Here is only a small list: Scooby-Doo, Stealing Harvard, The New Guy, and 40 Days and 40 Nights. JAMES E. LACZKOWSKI firstname.lastname@example.org Schererville, Ind.
Thank you, thank you, Ken Tucker and Bruce Fretts, for heaping praise upon the best television show of 2002: HBO's The Wire. I never thought that any show would help ease the pain of my dearly departed Homicide: Life on the Street, but this expertly written and acted piece of ensemble magic (from the wand, not coincidentally, of Homicide's David Simon) echoed that show's best moments, and also staked its own compelling territory. Giving an album of the year award to an artist as removed from the mainstream as British hip-hop act the Streets shows EW's genuine dedication to showcasing quality music no matter where it comes from. Well done, EW. Gareth Horwood Gareth853@hotmail.com Austin
