Is a road-trip movie defined by its vehicle? When Almost Famous rocker Crudup, blankly unsympathetic as New York architect Cal, deserts his family and hits the highway for some nihilistic, drunken soul-searching (and finds his own deserting father, the improbably young David Keith), he's behind the wheel of a, yep, Volvo station wagon. That bastion of yuppie complacency is the perfect ride for Traveler, which, despite a harrowing turn by Moore as a psycho hitchhiker, never overcomes its own -- or Cal's -- smugness, making his redemption about as risky as cruise control.
