Pump Up the Volume
''DOOM III'' GETS AMPED AND REVAMPEDOnly in the videogame industry would the creators of a paradigmatic franchise remake their original. id Software has given ''Doom III'''s hell spawn a face-lift, developed new lighting and physics engines (the equivalent of George Lucas building a camera from scratch), and juiced it up with an industrial soundtrack by Trent Reznor. The result: Your foes look horribly fleshy and die with convincing realism. ''Quake'' players, used to fragging at mind-blurring speeds, might initially find the slower fps frustrating, but it actually maximizes ''Doom III'''s cinematic hyperrealism, says designer Tim Willits: ''We want people to turn off the lights, fire up the game, then just scare the s--- out of 'em.''
