No stranger to the unusual, director John Waters calls the ballsy, gender-bending, oft-naked theatrical troupe born in late-'60s San Francisco ''hippie acid-freak drag.'' And how! Through glitter-bathed flashbacks and fond reminiscences from its proto-Ziggy Stardust founders, directors David Weissman and Bill Weber capture the era's essence. They engagingly chronicle these free spirits from their start at midnight screenings to their end, parted by differing goals, lost inspiration, and, eventually, a number of deaths from overdoses and AIDS. A long, strange trip, but one worth taking.
