Kate Hudson knows about protecting pricey baubles. For a key scene in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the actress donned both a $5 million Harry Winston diamond necklace and a $10,000 replica. ''We used the stunt necklace when Kate gets mad and runs off,'' says director Donald Petrie. Too bad Hudson didn't have a backup when, at age 19, she lost an earring from mom Goldie Hawn. ''My mother went to India and got me these beautiful paisley earrings with diamond chips,'' says Hudson, now 23. ''I went swimming in the ocean and when I got out one was gone. Two days later it found me -- it was just sitting on my bedside table.'' Meanwhile, costar Matthew McConaughey says women needn't worry about misplacing his gifts. ''I never have given a diamond to anyone,'' he says. ''But I've made some jewelry for [women]. I whittle them things.'' -- William Keck
RANDOM QUOTE ''We have a murder taking place at a foam party...which once again made me feel so old.... So often I'm like, 'What the hell's that?''' -- CSI's MARG HELGENBERGER, on an upcoming episode
