COULDN'T KEEP IT TO MYSELF: TESTIMONIES FROM OUR IMPRISONED SISTERS (2014)

The Oprah-sanctioned author of She's Come Undone does a bit of championing himself with this collection of personal stories written by inmates at the York Correctional Institution, Connecticut's maximum-security prison for women. The 12 riveting, touching autobiographical accounts look past the bars to lay bare lives that would normally have gone unheard: a mentally ill woman who spent years in silence after being raped and impregnated by her father; an inmate who, after gunning down her abusive husband, couldn't attend her son's funeral and has yet to visit his grave. Raw and intensely personal, Couldn't Keep It to Myself is often hard to take (with few exceptions, the men in these women's lives are monsters), but it deserves an audience.
