With its odes to tormented men, children corrupted by drugs and sex, and women who abort relationships, Chan Marshall's latest mines familiar dark-shadows turf. Her voice remains a dusky hush, turning songs by John Lee Hooker and cult folkie Michael Hurley into spooky whispers. But when Dave Grohl's scruffy drumming enters, the music finally lives up to the second half of her stage name. She's free indeed -- at least for the moment.
