THE CHART

STRAIT TO THE TOP

Thank god I'm a country boy!'' isn't just an exclamation of rural enthusiasm. It's the obvious reaction that George Strait and Kenny Chesney should have as they watch grosses roll in for their respective tours. A $656,115 one-nighter by Strait and Tammy Cochran in Phoenix led Billboard's weekly Boxscores chart. But Chesney's triple-bill tour with Montgomery Gentry and Kellie Coffey accounted for 6 of the top 15 spots, starting with a $532K gig in St. Paul at No. 2. Meanwhile, it was the bacon that was really coming home on the Gaither Homecoming tour. This mellow Christian-music draw landed grosses in the $238-272K range, even with the lowest (sub-$30) ticket prices of any charting act.
