Robert Downey Jr., last seen as a hallucinating author in the Sundance Festival feature ''The Singing Detective,'' will soon have his sanity tested again. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he's in talks to join Halle Berry and Penélope Cruz in the horror thriller ''Gothika,'' in which he'd play a psychiatrist at a mental hospital. The Warner Bros.-Columbia coproduction would mark his first major studio feature since 2000's ''Wonder Boys.''
Downey would play a colleague of Berry, herself a shrink who suddenly finds herself a patient at the hospital when she's accused of murder. As she tries to regain her memory and her sanity, she battles ghostly forces. Penélope Cruz has the Angelina Jolie role as a fellow inmate. French actor/director Mathieu Kassovitz (Audrey Tautou's love interest in ''Amelie'') will shoot ''Gothika'' in April, with an eye toward an October release.
