OLD SPICE The Spice Girls (clockwise, from top l.) Halliwell, Bunton, Beckham, Melanie ''Scary Spice'' Brown, and Chisholm had dinner!

It was just dinner, they said. Still, a Monday night gathering at the home of Victoria ''Posh Spice'' Beckham marked the first time all five of the former Spice Girls had been in the same room since 1998. So it's no wonder that press and fans were talking reunion.

The quintet that helped launch the worldwide boom in teen pop hadn't seen each other since Geri ''Ginger Spice'' Halliwell left the group at the height of its success five years ago. The remaining four have not recorded together in three years, and all five have launched solo careers, with limited success. When word leaked over the weekend of the get-together at ''Beckingham Palace'' (the country home where Posh and her husband, soccer star David Beckham, live), buzz started building.

''They did meet but it was a social occasion, not about getting back together,'' a Beckham spokesperson told the BBC. ''Victoria has signed a new deal, Emma [Bunton, ''Baby Spice''] has apparently signed a new deal. Geri is working on other things and it is just madness to say that they are getting back together.'' Melanie ''Sporty Spice'' Chisholm, who (in England, at least) has had the most successful solo career, is releasing her second album, ''Reason,'' next month, and she's touring the U.K. and Ireland this spring. Still, Reuters reports, British newspapers have spoken to insiders who say a greatest-hits album and reunion tour could be in the works, if not this year, then afterward.
