All About

Red Dragon

Let's pretend for a moment that Michael Mann didn't already brilliantly adapt Thomas Harris' original Hannibal Lecter novel as 1986's ''Manhunter.'' If that were the case, Brett Ratner's rote take on Red Dragon, in which retired FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton) consults the imprisoned Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) for help in capturing a serial killer known as the Tooth Fairy (Ralph Fiennes), would seem like a well-acted, smoothly shot thriller. But Mann did make ''Manhunter'' -- and its existence reveals ''Red'' as a well-acted, smoothly shot work of cinematic cannibalism.
