With the Smiths, Marr could let his depressive, skilled guitar do the talking. Boomslang is his debut as a frontman, but his voice doesn't have nearly the emotional range his ax once did. Worse still, the album's arrangements are limp and unimaginative. Boomslang is plenty amiable, but as Morrissey could have told you, pain is where true beauty comes from.
