Scorsese gloriously struggled with his faith in ''The Last Temptation of Christ,'' and fellow New York auteur Edward Burns seems to follow in his tracks with an overwrought, ''Mean Streets-y'' drama about revenge, brotherly love, and redemption. Three years after Sean Sullivan (Wood) is killed in Hell's Kitchen for killing three thugs planning to murder older brother Francis (Burns), the neighborhood folk (all marked with ash) start saying they've seen Sean's ghost. Has he been resurrected? Will Francis pay the ultimate price for his body- and sin-strewn past? In case anyone's confused, there's even a corpse in a crucifix-like pose. As a writer-director-star, Burns has come a long way from the self-righteous romantic trials of ''The Brothers McMullen,'' but let's pray that he learns more subtlety.
