The Clone Wars, which revved up at the end of Star Wars: Episode II, won't be fought in 2005's Episode III, and won't be directed by Jedi master George Lucas. Cartoon Network and animator Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack) are producing Clone Wars, 20 two-to-three-minute shorts, to air in fall 2003 and spring 2004, in the first animated Star Wars TV spin-off since 1986's The Ewoks. Lucas even gave Tartakovsky story freedom -- to a point. ''They wanted us to stay away from certain things [reserved for Episode III],'' he says. So while you won't see Anakin go the full Vader, you will see Mace Windu get Forceful after losing his lightsaber. But expect more Samurai Jack than Samuel L. Jackson: ''Instead of copying Star Wars, we're trying to make the action more stylized.'' And the dialogue a little less ridiculous, let's hope.
