Anyone who requires further proof after the sub dud ''K-19: The Widowmaker'' that Kathryn Bigelow and water don't mix need only check out the director's other soggy 2002 thriller -- which was shot before K-19 but sat in dry dock for more than two years. A nearly catatonic Penn mumbles through his role as a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet whose wife (Braveheart's Catherine McCormack) becomes obsessed with an 1873 murder case while on a boat trip with Penn's brother (Sweet Home Alabama's Josh Lucas) and his sultry girlfriend (Hurley). Bigelow awkwardly crosscuts between 19th-century flashbacks and scenes of Hurley sunbathing topless. Even that sight can't wake up Penn -- or the audience.
