The science and technical Oscars are apparently a lot less formal than the main Academy Awards. At Saturday's banquet for the behind-the-scenes Oscar winners, host and presenter Kate Hudson kicked off her heels partway through and presented half the awards barefoot. She also remarked on the difficulty she was having keeping her midriff-baring, floor-length black gown from falling off. ''This is horrible,'' she said, according to Reuters, as she fiddled frequently with her buttons. ''If you get bored, I just might pop open!''

If the ''How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'' star was unlikely to win the Best Supported Actress award, she still managed to entertain the mostly male group of techies in the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel's banquet hall, who were honored for various technical innovations in moviemaking. (Hudson will pay homage to Saturday's winners when she presents a clip reel of highlights from the banquet during the Academy Awards ceremony on March 23.) Oscar statuettes went to the makers of helium balloon-mounted lights for film sets, a portable sound recorder that captures information on a hard disk drive, and CGI software that creates digital characters. Hudson joked that such software could put live-action stars like her out of business, but for the most part, she recognized that these usually unglamorous folks were the ones who make her job possible. ''Thank you for everything you do that continues to advance what I do,'' she said.
