No Other (2003)

Long out of print, the former Byrd's big-budget 1974 flop was reputed to be a sort of folk-rock Sgt. Pepper, an overproduced mess that earned equal amounts of admiration and derision. As with many such lost artifacts, the reality is somewhat different -- the sound is for the most part tasteful and modest, extreme only when compared with Clark's earlier work. Some of the backing vocals are a bit excessive, but more often the production flourishes add rather than subtract. Think of it as a missing link between '60s folkie Fred Neil and Beck's Sea Change.
