Hollywood chemistry will be at work this summer as Oscar nominees Nicole Kidman and Daniel Day-Lewis shoot their next movies. (Not with each other, alas.) In her remake of ''The Stepford Wives,'' Kidman (up for Best Actress for ''The Hours'') will finally be partnered with a leading man taller than she is, while ''Gangs of New York'' Best Actor nominee Day-Lewis will meet his match in a similarly intense actress in ''Rose and the Snake.''

According to the Hollywood Reporter, John Cusack is in talks to play Kidman's husband in ''Stepford,'' a black-comic version of the 1975 thriller about a suburban housewife who uncovers the shocking secret behind the robotic behavior of her fellow soccer moms. Cusack's sister and frequent costar, Joan Cusack, also has a role in the movie, which shoots in June.

Day-Lewis' costar, according to the Reporter, will be Catherine Keener. The ''Being John Malkovich'' actress will play Day-Lewis' lover and the mother of two teenage boys, who all come to live with her new man and his sheltered teenage daughter. Sexual sparks then fly among the teens in ''Rose,'' whose director and co-writer is Day-Lewis' offscreen wife, Rebecca Miller (''Personal Velocity'').
