The Dixie Chicks were flying high at No. 1 on the country singles chart last week, but that was before listeners got wind of their anti-Bush and antiwar remarks. Their track ''Travelin' Soldier'' – a Vietnam-themed tune – rapidly dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the latest chart, according to USA Today. Singer Natalie Maines apologized on Friday for saying she was ashamed that Bush is from Texas, but many country stations are still refusing to play Chicks music.
''I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful,'' Maines said in a statement released by her publicist last week. ''I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.'' In an earlier response to protest against Maines' anti-Bush remark from a London stage, the Chicks had been defiant: ''While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost.''
