Benicio Del Toro, as a government-trained killer who has snapped from the stresses of the job and is now killing off-duty, is tracked by Tommy Lee Jones as the man who trained him. There'd be more inclination to ponder the deeper psychological themes implied in this cat-and-mouse hunt if the movie weren't so obviously turned on by the fetishism of the story: The production notes boast the amount of knife handling and fight training the actors underwent as if the simulation of authenticity were its own recommendation.
