Not many actresses could go from playing a martial arts-skilled assassin to playing a scientist with a Ph.D., but Uma Thurman is going to try. With her starring role in Quentin Tarantino's ''Kill Bill'' having wrapped (it's due in theaters in October), Thurman's next task will be probing Ben Affleck's memory in John Woo's sci-fi thriller ''Paycheck,'' Variety reports.

In the film, based on a story by Philip K. Dick (whose stories have inspired such films as ''Blade Runner,'' ''Total Recall,'' and ''Minority Report''), Affleck plays an electrician who learns that two years of his life have been erased from his memory, and whose life is endangered when he tries to solve the mystery of the missing years. Thurman will play Rachel, a corporate scientist, whom Affleck encounters in his quest to recover his memory. Variety reports that the movie is scheduled to start shooting next week in Vancouver, with an eye toward releasing the film by Christmastime.
