LEGACY

NBC journalist David Bloom, 39, who was traveling with U.S. forces in Iraq, died of a pulmonary embolism April 6. Bloom was best known as Today's enthusiastic weekend coanchor. He is among at least 12 journalists who have died while covering the current war (see Michael Kelly, left). The onetime White House correspondent is survived by his wife, Melanie, and three daughters.

CONTROVERSY

Does Eddie Griffin's DysFunKtional Family cross the line from humor to hate speech? Adherents of the Sikh religion -- which requires men to wear uncut beards and turbans -- point to a scene in which Griffin sees a Sikh man and calls out, ''Bin Laden! I knew you were around here.'' The Sikh Coalition's Prabhjot Singh explains, ''I appreciate a laugh as much as anyone, but when [Arizona gas station owner] Balbir Singh Sodhi got killed after 9/11 because he was confused for a terrorist, it wasn't funny at all.'' Miramax issued a statement defending Griffin and the film after receiving letters, calls, and petitions. But after a paltry $1 million opening, the studio may not be laughing. -- Sumeet Bal
