While CBS hasn't picked up this or any other show for next season, Trace seems a shoo-in for renewal. The question is, Can it overtake ER? ''People underestimate ER's strength,'' says LaPaglia. ''They haven't jumped the shark yet.'' But thanks to its self-contained episodes, Trace performs better in reruns than NBC's serialized hospital drama, so some insiders expect the freshman will pick up steam over the summer and win its time slot next season. ''I love ER,'' says CBS' Tassler. ''But everybody has to have a turn.''
