Owen Gleiberman is a film critic for EW
Christopher Guest's sublime, dizzying satire of American folk music and the people who once played it. Shot in Guest's patented mode of deadpan faux-documentary, the movie pokes its finger in the eye of folk musicians, in all their twee communal cheer, but it also gets you to fall for the mirage you're laughing at. Among the groups that assemble for a reunion concert are the New Main Street Singers, a brainwashed cult of smiley reformed misfits; the Folksmen (Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, reunited from Spinal Tap), a trio of ridiculously quaint and jaunty pluckers; and Mitch & Mickey (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara), whose tender warblings are at once a joke and something more--a repository of lost boomer dreams.
