ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Listen 2 This* WHAT'S ROCKING OUR WORLD

The great thrill of punk is the illusory feeling that, even if the music is tightly reined, anything could happen. Anything often does in the wildest moments of jazz, where anarchy in the USA isn't just a motto. That loose relation becomes clearer with THESE ARE THE VISTAS, the major-label debut of THE BAD PLUS(Columbia) a piano-bass-drums power trio who's forged a fairly traditionalist jazz sound any rocker could recognize as spiritually akin. Think Vince Guaraldi at CBGB instead of the Vanguard, and think about how desperately you need to hear an ivory-based ''Smells Like Teen Spirit'' that escalates from sheer elegance to a chaos the original only hinted at. The Bad Plus also tackle Blondie and Aphex Twin, but with equal measures of beauty, terror, and comedy in their own stuff, there's plenty going on besides stunt covers.
