On his past few albums, Thompson's routinely terrific songwriting has been obscured by florid, overbaked production. Not so on this effort, a low-wattage affair in which the guitarist is backed by a sturdy rhythm section and Judith Owen's shimmering vocals. The writing is just as rueful, darkly romantic, and exuberant as it's ever been.
