'DADDY' DEAREST

Eddie Murphy MAY HAVE trouble handling kids, but he managed to take control of the No. 2 spot with Daddy Day Care, earning $27.6 million in its debut weekend. Murphy hasn't been that popular since 2000's Nutty Professor II (which opened at $42.5 mil). But his latest incarnation was no match for the X2 mutants, who held on to their top position. The Fox sequel, on a record number of screens (3,749), has nearly matched its predecessor's total take ($157.2 mil) in just two weeks. And on a smaller scale, Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things disappointed with a $4,331 per-screen average, while Christopher Guest's A Mighty Wind gusted up seven spots in its fourth week.
